Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but, by that time she was already making her television debut in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001.
